DEPARTMENT FRESHIE NIGHT ‘18
After several postponements leaving the freshers in state of feverish anticipation, Freshie Night was held on Monday, 10th September. The event was kickstarted by Aneesh J, member of the Department Council, whose welcome speech was met with thunderous applause, courtesy of his classmates from the HS16 batch. HSB 336 was teeming with people as seniors arrived in groups, to support (and roast?) the new entrants to the department, as well as for the obvious promise of free food which no IITian will ever turn down. The first performance was a Bengali poem recital by Chandrima, and was passionately delivered even as the meaning remained unknown to many in the auditorium. Following her heartfelt rendition, the MCs called upon Anand for the second performance, which was met with whistles and cheers. The crowd’s favorite Anand performed a Japanese song and the all-time rock classic “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC. After the applause dimmed down, Anand left the stage in his trademark dramatic style. After that, a group of freshers performed the song “Everything at Once” which was a beautifully sung Acapella-like version, with subtle harmonies. As the night progressed, we were treated to another musical performance by the Freshers, this time to two classic Tamil and Malayalam songs.

After the performance, the MCs took to the stage to announce their next segment: the performance by seniors. The first to come up on stage was Biyas from the HS14 batch, who sang a Malayali song and received a roaring applause from his loving fanbase (all the Mallu juniors, of course!). Next up was our department’s musical legend, Kajal from HS16, accompanied by Ananthajit from the HS15 batch, playing the tabla. Kajal belted out a Malayali song that won over the audience with its mellifluous tune. Following Biyas and Kajal’s duet, was Sree Parvathy from HS16 who performed the song “Jee Le Zara” from the Bollywood movie Talash. After Parvathy, Arvind from HS16 took to the stage to perform ghazals, both originally written as well as those composed by veterans. Arvind’s deep, poetic words on love left the crowd interjecting with sighs of approval every few minutes.

As the performances came to a close, the freshers went up on stage one by one to introduce themselves and it was a sight of joy as seniors lightheartedly jibed their juniors and everyone came to know one another. It marked the end of Freshie Night, a night which was seemingly taken over by the seniors, treated the audience to some beautiful music. It was a night of fun and laughter as we warmly welcomed our youngest into the department.
