The IDL has begun in its inaugural edition. The department has managed to do well in football and a sterner test awaits them. But in the meanwhile, there are many other sports being conducted. The department is finally venturing into the larger domain of sport, and so the IDL represents a welcome change.
The HS team embarked on its volley campaign against the Department of Chemical Engineering on the 11th of September, in what turned out to be a humdinger of a match. It was a closely fought battle, the HS team losing two sets by a scarce difference and winning one. Unfortunate as this was, this is a testament to the tenacity we possess and spells great prospects for our future stints in the IDL.
Following a flexible arrangement, the positions were as follows:
Plus: Jithin/ Biyas
Centre: Nityanshu
Minus: Savio/Monish/Indu
Booster: Sandeep/Ananthu
Serving: Haripriya/Ammu
Non-serving: Deva Nandan

The match was played in sets of 3. The first was taken by the Chemical Engineering department by a margin of 25-23. At no point during the three sets could you determine who was in dominance, the HS team’s grit keeping it in good stead. The second set was more favourable for the HS team, enjoying a good lead, until towards the end, when the Chemical Engineering department stole the lead. But in true style, the HS team came from behind and reclaimed the set, winning by a margin of 22-25. The final set was almost identical to the final set, ensuring several nailbiting moments. Unfortunately, the Chemical Engineering team barely managed to gain the upper hand, winning the final set 17-15, and with that, the match.

The highlights of the match included some great passing from Nityanshu and Monish, sharp drops and attacking strikes from Jithin, the captain and Savio’s acrobatic boosts in the second set. Sandeep proved to be a stable presence and Biyas’s unorthodox handling of the ball was difficult for the opposition to anticipate. Certain instances of judging the ball poorly cost the team a fair bit, but the proceedings were always on equal footing. This is a sign of better things to come, and with hope we await next year.
