The Department Football Tournament usually takes place in February, marking an annual event during the second semester of the academic year. It serves as a platform for friendly competition among students and faculty. This year, due to fewer participating teams, the format deviated from the usual group stage to a direct knockout, with initial matches determining the seeding for the semifinals. HS19 held the title of reigning champion, and all matches took place in the evening at Sangam Ground. Below, we present a brief summary of key matches from this year’s tournament.
Even the impending Quiz 1 on the horizon couldn’t put a damper to the tournament. The matches were highly energetic and the ties were very close. The tournament faced multiple postponements (two, to be precise) for a multitude of reasons, but the steadfast dedication of the organisers, especially Vishal from HS20, and the participating teams ensured that the tournament proceeded without any hiccups. Santhosh (HS21), Appukrishnan (HS20), Krishna (HS20), Nafih (CH20), the referees for the tournament, were usually spot on and kept the flow of the match intact. Despite HS19 and the PhD Scholars’ inability to participate in the tournament due to a lack of team members, they didn’t let it dampen their spirits. Those interested still participated for other teams.
This edition of the tournament saw a notable participation of Professor Dr. Kipgen in a match, for it’s been a while since a faculty member has joined the action. This involvement added a unique dynamic to the tournament, and hopefully, it signals the beginning of more faculty involvement in future editions. Without further ado, let’s delve into the tournament’s proceedings.
From the outset, teams exhibited grit, skill, and unwavering determination, laying the groundwork for a memorable journey through the tournament. Each match was gripping from start to finish and was a testament to the players’ commitment to their respective teams. We begin our report on the group stage matches which would fix the semi-finals seeding. Despite HS21’s valiant effort, they were unable to secure a result against HS20, who advanced to the next round with a 2-0 victory. The lack of a striker due to Fareed’s absence was detrimental to their chances. HS20 progressed to the semis to face either HS22 or HS23.
HS23, being a new team, has been at the centre of questions regarding their participation and integration. However, any doubts were dispelled as they cheered for their classmates, encouraging them regardless of mistakes, thus ensuring fiercely competitive yet fair matches, which is the essence of football. They defeated HS22, despite resilient defence by Kinshuk and Siri, and the goalkeeper Behjad making several crucial saves. However, the HS23 team, led by their striker Hazo and Prof. Kipgen, proved too hot to handle. The final score was 3-1, and thus, they progressed to the next round to face HS21. The subsequent rounds were initially scheduled for the following weeks but had to be rescheduled to March 9 and 10 due to unforeseen circumstances.
The semis kicked off with HS20 taking on HS22. HS20’s narrow 1-0 win over HS22 in the semi-finals, thanks to a low shot from a free kick taken by Appu, which clinched their spot in the finals. Similarly, HS23’s dominant performance against HS21, culminating in a resounding 4-0 victory, underscored their status as formidable contenders for the title. Despite the competitive nature of the matches, teams exhibited respect and admiration for their opponents, fostering an atmosphere of mutual appreciation and friendship, with only a few skirmishes, which were promptly resolved.
The finals of the tournament was conducted on March 10. The match for 3rd place between HS22 and HS21 saw HS22 emerge victorious with a commanding 3-0 win, with Akhil from HS22 scoring a hat-trick to secure their place on the podium. The game was tied and a mistake by the HS21 backline was punished. The game turned on its head as HS22 took the reins off the match. The finals were scheduled as the last match of the day.
Finally, the much-anticipated final between HS20 and HS23 kicked off at 8:30 PM. HS20, eager to claim the title, faced off against HS23, who had dominated the tournament with their skill and tenacity. In a display of sheer brilliance, HS23 emerged victorious with an emphatic 5-0 win, clinching the Department Football tourney of 2024. The duo of Hazo and Prof. Kipgen stood out, with the new batch absolutely dominating the field. Their fast breaks resulting from interceptions showcased the team’s defensive prowess.
