Manifesto Review 2023-24 | Department Secretary

Swapnaneel Dan

As Appukrishnan M V assumed his role as Department Secretary (2023-2024), coinciding with the arrival of the newly formed 2-Year MA batches, his vision centered on emphasizing the value of teamwork to achieve shared objectives. He aimed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment within the department, encouraging everyone to feel comfortable sharing their ideas and collaboratively turning them into reality. Appu’s tenure began with the HS Hullabaloo Brainy Banter Quiz Competition on August 21st, supported by Quiz Club members Anand and Abhineet. The event saw an unexpectedly large turnout, revitalizing the department corridors with lively banter among students from the Integrated MA, new MA, and Ph.D. batches. Throughout the year, Appu organized numerous sessions, seminars, guest lectures, and alumni talks to foster cohesion among students and ensure a steady flow of events.

In September, the Prem Ranjan Memorial Cricket Tournament was revived after a three-year hiatus, drawing enthusiastic participation and intense competition from cricket lovers within the department. Under Appu’s leadership, the Department Photography Club was also established, providing a space for photography enthusiasts to discuss and appreciate photography as both an art form and a powerful medium. November saw the Intra Department Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, generating excitement and active participation from many students.

The second semester of Appu’s tenure commenced with the triumphant return of the beloved Department Chess Club. This initiative aimed to rejuvenate interest in the game of chess and foster a vibrant community built on passion, camaraderie, and a love for the noble game. In February, the Intra Department Football Tournament was organized, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie and sportsmanship as students gathered to support their classmates and friends. March brought the Department Night, a celebration filled with music and dance that aimed to showcase the talent and creativity of our students. The 13th edition of the DoHSS Annual Academic Conference took place in the first week of April, followed closely by the Bhargavi Memorial Word Games and Quiz Tournament.

Appu’s tenure concluded in May with the inauguration of the Department’s Box Cricket Tournament, the Intra-Department Chess Tournament, and the organization of the HS19 Farewell. Additionally, the department opened a new Mural Area Space, accessible to students at all hours, in line with Appu’s infrastructural initiatives. Although some of the Department Secretary’s initiatives, such as the introduction of Trinity Affairs and Subject Weekender, remain unfulfilled, many others were proposed, advocated for, and implemented throughout his tenure. As the selection of the next Department Secretary concludes, it is clear that Appukrishnan’s tenure has laid the foundations for many future events and initiatives that will be realized in the coming years.
