EVENING OF THE FRESHIES !

The Best. Period. Those are the words that were on everyone’s lips throughout the Freshie Evening of the Department that was held at the Mahatma Hall on September 28, 2016. After endless deliberations with our seniors, we were able to postpone the special evening, owing to the Logic quiz which anyway screwed us all. But in the process, we got enough time to prepare for something mesmerizing, something unprecedented, that kept everybody glued to their seats that evening. It was a vibrant event with everything from classic to modern, from pop to rap, and from local to global!  Nevertheless, the mime was the soul of the whole evening.

Under the able anchoring of Ganesh Dileep and Yadu Krishnan, the program explored uncharted islands of excellence and more than fulfilled its promise. In the gracious presence of Prof. Santhosh Abraham and Prof. MilindBrahme, it all began with a classical Bharatanatyam performance by Sharada Priya and SruthiRanjani. They were grace personified. Before the audience could get over its captivating effect, came a musical performance by Azeesh, Urudhi and Sreeparvathy. Azeesh created a magic with piano while the girls sang Hindi and Malayalam songs together.

Later, Azeesh also surprised the audience with his mimicry skills. Rahul and Sagar presented a rap song, the beats of which got everyone up on their feet. The best part of it all was that the song, as well as the music composition, was completely original. While the lyrics were written by Sagar himself, he was assisted by his friend from school for the music composition part. Musical performances by Yogesh, Kajal and Tenzing followed in a variety of genres and languages. Gokul and Arvind read out their self-composed poems in English and Hindi respectively. Their profound poetry succeeded to resonate with the stream of audience’s emotions. In response to Arvind’s poetry, ProfBrahme said that many in the audience would be puzzled for the next 5 years as to what he actually meant due to the ornate usage of Hindi and Urdu words.

After Arvind’s poetry came the highlight of the evening- the mime performed by our class group. It dealt with how humans started out as primates and climbed the ladder of evolution just to go back again to being animals. With snippets from all spheres of life, it showcased how man invented fire and wheel and how humanity progressed from chariot to space technology. In the later half, it portrayed the deplorable state of affairs of the world today, ranging from rape to war and terrorism. The mime ended with a strong message of how the human race needed to do an introspection in order to stop reverting to being savages once again. The team effort was such that even words like breathtaking, mind blowing and immaculate would fall and shatter if used to describe its magnitude.

The final act was a dance by the girls. It was a very well-choreographed performance that left the audience cheering. The program came to an end with Simha (the Professor among us all!) delivering a paradoxical vote of thanks! And it certainly had the audience’s approval. The program was followed by refreshments and “interaction sessions” by seniors.
