Prem Ranjan Memorial Cricket Tournament: Day 1

 

The Prem Ranjan memorial cricket tournament started off on the 4th of March at Sangam grounds. The first match between the fifth years and the PhDs started of at 7pm with the toss, won by the fifth years, who chose to bat first. Anand and Sridhar opened the batting line and Ranjit was the opening bowler.  Shabna took the first wicket of the match, to cries of jubilation amongst her team mates. Jyothika, next batswoman was out by a hit-wicket. Ultimately, the first innings closed with a score of  51-3.

Anil Kumar and Radif opened the  batting lineup for the PhD’s. Mahesh opened bowling for the second innings.The match witnessed some superb batting by the PhD opening batsmen, and they won the match for the PhD’s in just three overs without conceding a single wicket. The second innings came to a quick end amidst celebrations amongst the PhD’s.

The score at the end of first innings: 54-0.

The second match of the Prem Ranjan Memorial Cricket tournament which was played between the freshies and the third years was definitely worth the watch. The first years certainly did not have it easy as they had to face the Defending Champions in their very first match. The third years won the toss and chose to bat. Nithyanshu(53*) and Santhosh(66) eased their way through all the 8 overs to achieve a whooping total of 151 runs in just 48 balls. The opening batsmen’s partnership was broken only in the very last ball of the first innings when Santhosh was run out.

The first years had a daunting target of a 152 runs from 48 balls, which they earnestly tried to achieve. Sai Chandan Kotu(7) was bowled by Biyas Mohammed in the first over of the match. He also went on to take two more wickets [Athul Muraleedharan(37), Sushmit Panzade(6)] in his next over.Aishwarya bowled a brilliant two overs in which she took one wicket by giving away 16 runs [Libin John(7) ] and S.Gopika  was run out. Athul Muraleedharan who was 4th in the batting order took then took the charge and scored a good 37 runs in 10 balls, and was dismissed by Biyas. Sukruth bowled the last over and dismissed Savio(7) and Gokul Vijay(3).

The score at the end of second innings: 93-7.

The Third years won the match by 58 runs.
