Entering its final phase, the Prem Ranjan tournament brimmed with surprises and intense encounters, heightening the anticipation for the grand finale set on October 6th. The Sangam Ground which has been the perennial host of this cricketing event witnessed another showdown between two formidable teams and it promised to be a very exciting encounter as the Defending champs faced off against the undefeated HS20, the match up had every credential to be the ultimate rivalry, as you would without a doubt remember the grit, aggression and heat that both these sides displayed earlier in the group stages.
This edition of the Prem Ranjan Tournament signified a return to normal, injecting an extra layer of thrill and nostalgia, as the last tournament was conducted in pre-COVID times. And this grand finale is the ultimate testament of Cricketing and sporting spirit in the department. However, the journey to the final wasn’t without challenges, as weather delays tested most of the teams. Despite obstacles, the unwavering determination of the organising team prevailed, ensuring the clash unfolded with the same intensity even if it was delayed.
As the day kicked off HS20 won the toss and decided to bat, the intensity was palpable from the outset. Akash, aiming to be a game-changer, dismissed Appu, who was in a sublime form throughout the tournament and the moment tilted the game in favour of PhD. Akash was soon joined by Navaneeth, as they dominated the field by closing all the doors for runs creating a sense that PhD was firmly in the driver’s seat.
But HS20 proved their mettle as a quick partnership between Shubham and Demudu began to show promise for HS20. Just as it seemed that PhD had things under control, the dynamic captain and vice-captain duo, Shubham and Demudu, took centre stage to rescue HS20. Under immense pressure, they showcased their prowess by running between the wickets, converting singles into doubles, and displaying exceptional teamwork. A remarkable moment occurred when they ran four runs in a single delivery. And as they settled the boundaries started coming and the partnership was arguably one of the most important partnerships in the tournament considering the context of the final. Just when the duo looked perfectly settled, Sanoop struck and took Demudu’s wicket.
But after this, Shubham began to dominate the proceedings. With every second ball finding its way into the stands, HS20 managed to reach a total not many would have expected in the beginning. Shubham’s unbeaten 85* off 36 balls helped in posting a massive target and this innings underlined his importance on the grand stage when the pressure was immense. The team concluded their innings with a grand total of 127 runs, setting a challenging target for PhD.
Despite Akash Yadav’s explosive start, scoring 26 runs in the very first over, the tide turned when the HS20 captain returned with the ball. Spot-on bowling by Shubham Express removed the dangerous Akash Yadav. HS20’s fielding prowess, notably Naidu’s outstanding catch at long off, further solidified their advantage. Akku and Faiza’s overs in the middle were crucial as they bowled very effective lengths in the middle. Despite the lower-order batsmen’s efforts, the target of 127 proved insurmountable, especially after losing crucial wickets of Akash and Arjun early on in the game.
As the dust settled, HS20 emerged victorious, standing head and shoulders above all. The celebratory atmosphere at the Sangam Ground reached its peak as the champions collectively cherished their success by proudly lifting the trophy. Individual accolades were bestowed upon the outstanding performers, with Santhosh Satyala earning the title of the best batsman, Akash Yadav recognised as the best bowler, and Santhosh Satyala declared as the MVP. Faiza was honoured as the best female player. The passion and emotions were visibly running high. This might just have been one of the most enjoyable and absorbing tournaments in a long while as all the players and spectators enjoyed every moment.
